Matha tirtha aaushi aka Mothers’ Day falls on the Baishak Krishna Aaushi each year. Mata tirtha aaushi (मातातीर्थ औंसी) also known as Aamako mukh herne din (आमाको मुख हेर्ने दिन) is auspicious Nepali festival for paying homage to the mothers for their love, sacrifice, and life support. On this date, it is considered very important to remember, meet and express affection to one’s mother and to give alms and organize charity in the name of late mothers.
On the same day, Thousand of people visit Mata Tirtha Pond, a pilgrimage site on the outskirts of Kathmandu Valley to remember deceased mothers. It is believed that those who take a holy bath in the pond and offer tarpan & sida today will help his/her mother reach salvation, achieve Moksha, and bring prosperity to the family. If the mother is remembered and respect, love, and care for her are expressed, there will be a strong and no rift in the relationship between the mother and her child/ren.
